CHANGING THE INTERNAL CABIN AIR FILTER (MICROFILTER)

The internal cabin air filter is a good thing to change out (it is suprising how much nicer the internal cabin is when you have a clean filter). The dealership quoted me about $200 to replace it but I found that the job was pretty simple to do.

Just incase you didn't know, every BMW I have owned has had this screw driver hidden somewhere. On my 435xi it is in the trunk hidden under a panel on the right. I use that screw driver for everything.
EQUIPMENT, SKILL, TIME, PARTS

These are the following tools I used: F32 10mm socket F32 Torqs T20 driver BMW Screwdriver

This is very straight forward to do. As long as you are gentle with the plastic.

Time wise this took me under 30 min to complete.

Parts wise I got the MANN filter with the charcoal: Micro Filter (64-11-9-237-555-M63)

STEP #1:

The filter is located under and behind the glove box. You can access it by removing the plastic panel under the glove box.

STEP #2:

Under the glove box look for these two 10mm nuts (see red circles) and remove them.

STEP #3:

There are two metal clips that are a friction fit that are holding the front of the panel on. I gently used the flat screw driver and pryed it. a plastic prybar would also work, or your fingers if you are really strong.

STEP #4:

You can see the two metal clips on the left and right in this picture. There are two more hooks that are holding the plastic tray in place as well as the power wire for the foot light. Gently pull the plastic cover towards you to get it free.

STEP #5:

The footlight wire is removed by simply pulling the connector out. To the extreme left and right of the panel (in line with the footlight) you can see the other hooks I mentioned.

STEP #6:

With the plastic panel now free, move it to a safe location so you can get under there and see the filter housing.

The "trap door" of the filter housing is held on with two T20 screws. Unscrew them and then gently pull the cover off.

STEP #7:

The "trap door" has a rubber gasket to keep it air tight and it has a sensor flap that means you can't fully take the "trap door" off. Just move it out of the way so you can get the filter out. The filter is now free and it is flexible so you can take it out and repace it with a new one.

Install is reverse. Installing the plastic tray is done with gentle patience and pay attention to all the hooks you have to get lined up.
