UNIVERSAL GARAGE DOOR OPENER

BMW uses both the static and rolling HomeLink systems. I would recommend buying a rolling code UGDO since they work on both.

Here is a list of ways to tell if a BMW UGDO is a rolling code one or not: --If the UGDO came out of a 2000 or later BMW then it is probably a rolling code one. --If the numbers on the three buttons are painted white then it is probably a rolling code one. --If the LED is Green or amber then it is definitely a rolling code one. (Red is the color of the non-rolling code LED)

EQUIPMENT, SKILL, TIME, PARTS

The only tool that is needed is the screw driver that is part of the trunk tool kit (the one pictured here is #71-11-1-179-629.

This is a very simple part to replace.

This replacement should take about 30min or less.

For this year all UGDO are the same. You can find them in part yards or on ebay. I got mine from ebay.

STEP #1:

Get the cover off. Using the screw driver or a plastic pry bar lightly push on the barbs to release the cover.

STEP #2:

The cover has a pre-scored area where the UGDO is supposed to go. Carefully cut the pre-scored area and remove it from the cover. (I used a drill to cut a hole in the middle first then a small saw to cut from the hole to the pre-scored lines. I trimmed off some of the excess fabric with a knife).

STEP #3:

The connectors are tucked away and wrapped in the felt tape; it has two connectors in it. One is for the UGDO and the other is for the microphone (for hands free phone). If you have an early to mid 90’s BMW then the connector will only have 2 wires and not the 3rd wire for button illumination. The good news is that the newer rolling code UGDO will still work but the buttons will not be illuminated at night. For those of you not willing to take “NO” for an answer there is a way to get the buttons illuminated. The sunroof button is illuminated therefore all you have to do is splice a wire from the sunroof button to the UGDO.
STEP #4:

Once the connector is attached, just 'rock' the UGDO into place. The brab tabs on the UGDO will clip onto the cutout and hold it in place.

STEP #5:

Tuck the cable behind the sunroof manual control unit and then line up the lip of the cover with the front light panel and rock the whole unit back into place

lip of cover is lined up with the front light panel.

STEP #6:

Give a light press to reattach cover to the roof.

STEP #7:

Use these BMW Homelink instructions to program your UGDO
